How to arrange PhD course LMF equipment bookings

During the PhD practical courses, many groups need to use LMF microscope systems as part of the teaching. Our experience tells us that this needs to be arranged well in advance in a systematic and functional way:

  • You must give LMF at least 2 weeks notice when requesting a slot for teaching on a microscope system.
    • Send an email to LMF@mpi-cbg.de detailing what systems you need, what small equipment you need, and when you need it.
    • LMF will book the slots for you on behalf of the PhD program budget, and make a note in the booking about who is the teacher and so on.

NOTE: We will not push other users off their booked slots because a teacher was not organized enough to have us reserve the microscope well in advance.

  • The person who will be teaching the students at the microscope must be a trained user of that microscope system already.
    • As a teacher, dont expect to get last minute training on an LMF system and then be responsible for showing students experiments on that system. Negative experiences of this approach show us that its not a good plan.
    • The trained teacher should be present at all times that a student is present at the microscope system.
    • Untrained PhD students should not be left unsupervised, lest their intelligence and creativity get the better of them.
