How to edit & add equipment

Overview

Each equipment in this wiki (i.e. light microscope, computer) is represented by a single page which contains all the data. You can access the page for a particular system via the Equipment link in the sidebar. Printout and digital distribution of each individual page can be facilitated with the "Print as PDF" function in the sidebar.

Light Microscopes

Edit an existing system

Editing an equipment page is facilitated by a so called form. Once you are on the equipment page of interest, click on the tab on top of the page which is named edit with form. This loads the form for light microscopes which contains the data that got add for the particular system. Modify the entries you want and click on Save page below the form. The button Show changes brings up a page which illustrates the changes you did compared to the last saved version.

Add a new system

Go to the full list of light microscopes and scroll down to very end. There you will find a field with a button called add/edit microscope next to it. Type in a name for the new page. Remember that the name of this page has to be unique and should follow certain naming conventions, which are:

id - name, whereas id = facility shortcut + unique number (i.e. MPI01)
(The length of id is limited to 5 digits, 3 for the facility shortcut and 2 for the unique number.)

Click on the button add/edit microscope which brings you to the form for that page. Consider these points:

If you cannot find an objective, a light source or a type of incubation in the dropdown lists, you have to go back and add these things first. Have a look at the FAQ.

Once you put all the data there, click on Save page.

How do I add more objectives, light sources and types of incubation to the predefined lists in the form?

The content of each of these dropdown lists gets generated from a -db category: category:objective-db, category:illumination-db. Each page in this category represents one entry in the dropdown list. In order to add an entry, you just have to create an according page:

New objective: Type the name for the new objective in the sidebar's search field. Follow these naming conventions to keep a certain order:
- manufacturer name magnification NA immersion PhX
- air objective: leave out [immersion], no phase contrast: leave out [PhX]
- example: Zeiss EC Plan-Neofluar 100x 1.3 Oil
Click the button Go. On the next page, click the link create this page. Enter

New light source: Type the name for the new light source in the sidebar's search field. Check for appropiate naming in the category:illumination-db, i.e.: Laser Diode 405 nm, Transmitted Light (Halogen), Fluorescence (Polychromator 300-650 nm). Click the button Go. On the next page, click the link create this page. Enter

New type of incubation: Type the name for the new type of incubation in the sidebar's search field. Check for appropiate naming in the category:incubation-db, i.e.: cage incubator (T+CO2), stage incubator (T) + objective heater. Click the button Go. On the next page, click the link create this page. Enter

The type of microscope I want to add is not in the list. What should I do?

Simliar to the objectives etc., the types of microscopes are grouped in a category which is in this case the category:microscope-cat. If you want add a new type of microscope, type the name in the sidebar's search field and click the button Go. On the next page, click the link create this page. Enter

and click the button Save page.

How do I remove a system from the list which does not exist anymore?

In the equipment form, go to the field category and select Not listed from the dropdown menu.

How can I restore a system that got moved to Not listed?

Follow the link to the removed systems at the very end of the full list, select the system of interest and set the category back to Microscope.

I added a new system, but cannot find it in the full equipment list. What's the problem?

The query that generates the full equipment list takes some time to refresh. Go to the light microscope query and just run it with empty fields, then the new system should appear immediately after adding it.

How do I change the picture of a microscope?

If you want to change the picture of the microscope you first have to click on the picture on the page of the microscope. Now you come to the page containing the picture. At the bottom of this page you can click Upload a new version of this file. Just browse in the opening dialogue for the new file and click on Upload File.

Computers

Edit an existing computer

Each computer page can be added by a form. You can find the link to that form on top of each computer page: edit with form. Apply your changes and save the page.

Add a computer

New computers can be added via the editing form. Go to the full list of computers; at the end of the list you will find a field with a button labelled edit/add computer next to it. Type in a name for the new computer. Remember: this will be the page name and has to be unique. The same naming conventions as for light microscopes are valid here as well:

Enter all the necessary data and save the page.

FAQ

Where can I add another operating system to the form's dropdown list?

The content of this dropdown list is generated from the category:operating system. You have to add a page there in order to add an operating system. Enter the name of the operating system in the search field of the sidebar and click Go. On the next page, click the create this page link, then enter

in the editing field and click Save page. Reload the computer form and the operating system should be there.

How do I remove a computer from the list?

In the equipment form, go to the field category and select Not listed from the dropdown menu.
