more line averaging vs. slower scan speed - impact on noise

[edit] Overview

Averaging helps to remove noise from the image. It mainly filters intensity fluctuations, while specific pixel intensities remain in the image.

Two types apply for confocal microscopes:

  • Line Averaging - each line gets scanned and averaged before moving to the next, best solution for most cases
  • Frame Averaging - whole image gets scanned and averaged, image quality improvement gets visualized better
