[edit] available wallpapers

  • [X]_[Y] = the actual screen resolution; for best visibility, choose the correct one for each individual system! see down below
  • Which resolutions for which screen combination? Here is a small guideline, but check the actual resolution at the system!
    • 30" wide-screen: 2560_1600
    • 24" wide-screen: 1920_1080
    • 20" wide-screen: 1680_1050
    • dual 20" wide-screen: 1680_1050 / 3360_1050
    • 20": 1600_1200
    • dual 20": 1600_1200 / 3200_1200
    • 19": 1280_1024
    • dual 19": 1280_1024 / 2560_1024
  • note: the second options for dual configurations (after the /) might be necessary in some cases where the background is not doubled, but stretched over two screens

[edit] general layout scheme for lmf windows-driven computers

  • for administrator account, choose Windows XP
  • for lmf user account, take lmf-wallpaper-[X]_[Y]
  • for the Windows log-on/start-up screen, use lmf-wallpaper-[X]_[Y]-startup

[edit] get the wallpaper files

  1. log in as administrator
  2. connect to the LMF fileserver
  3. copy all the *.bmp files in the "wallpaper" folder to "C:\Windows" - done!

[edit] set up the wallpaper for the start-up screen

  1. log in as administrator
  2. right-click on a free area of the desktop
  3. select "Properties"
  4. check the screen resolution in the tab "Settings"
  5. click "OK"
  6. open the registry: click "Start" > select "Run..." > type "regedit" > click "OK"
  7. go to the path: HKEY_USERS > .DEFAULT > Control Panel > Desktop
  8. double-click "Wallpaper" and enter "C:\Windows\lmf-wallpaper-[screen resolution]-startup.bmp"
  9. check that the value down below ("WallpaperStyle") is "2"
  10. close the registry, log off - done!

  1. log in as "lmf user"
  2. right-click on a free area of the desktop
  3. select "Properties"
  4. check the screen resolution in the tab "Settings"
  5. select the tab "Desktop"
  6. scroll down the wallpaper list until you find one which is called "lmf-wallpaper-[screen resolution].bmp"
  7. click "OK" - done!

[edit] troubleshooting

  • wallpaper is stretched in an ugly way
    • the wallpaper does not fit the screen resolution; select a wallpaper that fits
    • two-screen configurations might require an extra-wide version (same resolution in Y, double in X)
  • folder "C:\Windows" does not exist
    • use "C:\WINNT" on older Windows 2000 systems
  • the setting in the registry seems to have no effect, the start-up background still looks standard
    • make sure you got the registry path right; there are several one, but only one for the start-up screen
    • the setting only applies if the welcome screen is activated: go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users..., here deactivate "Use the welcome screen"
(take care: this changes the way users have to log in to the older Windows 2000 style, meaning they have to type in "lmf user" and the password in a dialog)
