Networking
To provide optimal support for facility users, the BioDIP Network fosters exchange between core facilities both locally and globally through partner entities, projects, and individual interactions. By actively engaging in community teaching and outreach, solving technical challenges, and incubating expertise, BioDIP ensures that its users remain at the forefront of the imaging world.
The BioDIP facilities also provide contact points for former users: BioDIP alumni can stay in touch and have access to the biodip's joint expertise through getting involved in our network efforts.
BioDIP is a project within DRESDEN concept - alliance of science of culture, situated on the forefront of the science hub Dresden. The development and use of synergies in the fields of research, education, infrastructure and administration is the focus of this unique cooperation of research and culture institutions in Dresden.
All BioDIP equipment is contained in the database of the DRESDEN concept Technology Portal and can be found via the database search engine.

BioDIP facilities are active members of German BioImaging - Gesellschaft für Mikroskopie und Bildanalyse (GerBI-GMB, Society for Microscopy and Image Analysis), the German network of microscopists and imaging specialists. BioDIP facility staff members are active within the board of the society, and contribute to many GerBI workgroups.
GerBI offers an annual "Core Facility Leadership and Management Course" that has been attended by several BioDIP Facility staff members already.
In addition, GerBI also provides a "Job Shadowing" program to facilitate exchange between members. Since 2008 BioDIP hosted visiting core facility colleagues from Berlin, Bonn, Cologne, Heidelberg, Magdeburg and Freiburg. In turn BioDIP members visited facilities in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Berlin and Düsseldorf as part of the Job Shadowing initiative.
In 2016 it was our pleasure to host the successful DFG supported conference "Trends in Microscopy" (TiM2016) at the CRTD in Dresden. TiM2016 was co-organized by GerBI-GMB and BioDIP.

The mission of the Euro-BioImaging initiative is to provide open access state-of-the-art imaging research infrastructure, service and training for every live scientist in Europe and beyond.
BioDIP aims to join the Euro-BioImaging (EUBI) network and expressed its interest to become a EUBI Node during the first open call for nodes in 2013. The applications were reviewed by an independent evaluation board. BioDIP received the highest ranking and is "highly recommended" to become a European multi modal multi sited node for advanced light microscopy (view report). As Germany still did not join EUBI, these efforts are currently on hold.
NFDI4BIOIMAGE is part of Germany's National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). This consortium includes legally independent partner institutions collaborating to enhance the ability of researchers in Germany and internationally to professionally manage, store, annotate, share, and reuse research data. We focus on all stages of the research data life cycle for microscopy and bioimage analysis. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) has funded the NFDI4BIOIMAGE consortium since March 2023.
The Consortium for Quality Assessment and Reproducibility for Instruments and Images in Light Microscopy (QUAREP-LiMi) is a global community. It includes practitioners, researchers, developers, service providers, funders, publishers, policymakers, and industry professionals related to light microscopy. QUAREP-LiMi is dedicated to making quantitative and reproducible light microscopy, along with its data, accessible to all.
Our mission is to offer a comprehensive set of community-agreed guidelines, protocols, automation procedures, and other resources. These aim to enhance quality control, quality assurance, and instrument/method calibration. Stakeholders advocate for the highest level of reproducibility in data generated by light microscopy methods in scientific research and biotechnology applications.
To achieve its mission, QUAREP-LiMi:
- Authorizes Working Groups to form teams focusing on specific technical or outreach topics,
- Maintains, disseminates, and teaches best practices, protocols, and software tools, and
- Collaborates with providers of reference materials, instrumentation, or other tools to facilitate the implementation of best practices at the community level.
The Global BioImage Analysts’ Society (GloBIAS) aspires to be an international association uniting everyone interested in bioimage analysis. The society will facilitate learning and knowledge sharing among its members through various tools, including online events, in-person workshops, and online repositories.
GloBIAS is a registered not-for-profit organization. Its establishment is supported by a grant by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative for the project "Society for Knowledge Exchange in BioImage Analysis" until December 2025. After this period, the society aims to sustain itself through membership fees and activities.
